The temporary dysfunction of the pocket watch was making the train late. The unfortunate event happened when the light freighter, another train came moving in the same direction as the first train. The second train was heading towards a different side of the township. As a result of the delays caused by the dysfunction of the pocket watch, the two trains did not meet each other at the supposed location. Rather they collided near the towns edge causing eight casualties that included the two conductors of the respective trains. This unfortunate accident instigated a lot of changes in the rail community. One of the concourse for whom the incident proved fortunate was Mr. W. C. Ball who was a watchmaker as well as a jeweler and had specialized in the skill of pocket watch making. Ball knew how to keep track of time.
